Two routes lead to Fuchsia City, far to the south of Kanto: the Cycling Road, a long downhill ride on your bike, or the coastal path along Routes 12 to 15. Either way, a giant Snorlax blocks your path. Luckily, you have the Poké Flute.

😴Waking up Snorlax

South of Lavender Town (Route 12) as well as west of Celadon City (Route 16), an enormous Snorlax sleeps across the path. Stand in front of it and use the Poké Flute from the Items menu: it wakes up… in a very bad mood. That’s your chance to catch it. Snorlax is an exceptional Pokémon, with a huge amount of HP and the ability to learn almost every TM.

  • SnorlaxNormal

There are two in the game, one on each route. Save before waking it, put it to sleep (Sleep Powder, Hypnosis) and weaken it before throwing your Great Balls or Ultra Balls.

🚲Path 1: the Cycling Road (Routes 16 to 18)

From Celadon City, head west. Just before the Snorlax on Route 16, a small house hidden behind a shrub (Cut) shelters a young woman who gives you HM02 Fly. Thanks to the Thunder Badge, you can now fly instantly to any town you’ve already visited: a huge time-saver.

Next, hop on your Bicycle: the Cycling Road (Route 17) is a long downhill slope filled with Bikers and Cue Balls. Let yourself coast south, then Route 18 takes you to Fuchsia City.

🌊Path 2: the coast (Routes 12 to 15)

South of Lavender Town, Route 12 runs along the sea. In the house in the middle of the route, the Fishing Guru’s brother gives you the Super Rod, the best rod in the game. On 2F of the gatehouse, a little girl gives you TM39 Swift. Farther on, Routes 13 to 15 are full of Trainers and tall grass where Ditto hides. At the Route 15 gatehouse, Professor Oak’s aide gives you the Exp. Share if you’ve caught at least 50 species.

🏯Fuchsia City

Fuchsia City is home to the Safari Zone (covered in the next step), a small zoo and Koga’s Gym. In the house to the southeast, the Fishing Guru’s older brother gives you the Good Rod, which catches far more species than the Old Rod.

☠️Fuchsia City Gym

The Gym is dotted with invisible walls: move forward carefully and turn back when you get stuck. Six Jugglers and Tamers guard it. Koga, a true ninja, likes to poison and let time do its work.

Our strategy

Poison-type Pokémon fear Psychic and Ground: Kadabra, Alakazam, Hypno or a Dugtrio with Dig work wonders. Watch out for Weezing: it knows Self-Destruct, an explosion that can knock out your Pokémon in one hit (and knocks itself out too). Keep Antidotes handy against Toxic.

Yellow

In Yellow, Koga has changed his team: three Venonat (Lv. 44 to 48) and a Venomoth (Lv. 50), all of which know Psychic. A Fire- or Flying-type Pokémon does much better here.
