Pewter City, “the stone-gray city”, is home to the first Gym Leader on your journey. Brock and his Rock Pokémon are an impassable wall… if you haven’t prepared your team. The good news: with the right Pokémon, this battle becomes a formality.

🏛️The city and its museum
Start with the Pokémon Center at the entrance to the city. The Poké Mart sells the same items as in Viridian City: stock up on Potions and Antidotes. To the east, the Pewter Museum of Science (₽50 admission) displays a Kabutops skeleton and an Aerodactyl fossil, as well as a space shuttle on 2F. A scientist hidden in the back room of the building will give you the Old Amber once you can use Cut: make a note of it for later.
The eastern exit of the city is blocked by a kid until you have beaten Brock. His Gym awaits you in the center of Pewter City.
🧱Preparing for the battle based on your starter
Brock’s two Pokémon are Rock and Ground types: they resist Normal, Fire, Flying and Poison attacks, but fear Water, Grass and Fighting.
BulbasaurGrassPoisonVine Whip (level 13) deals double damage... and even quadruple damage against Geodude and Onix, which are both Rock and Ground. The easiest fight.
SquirtleWaterBubble, then Water Gun: every hit hurts. Aim for level 12 and you'll have no trouble.
CharmanderFireThe tough case: Ember is not very effective. Raise Charmander to around level 14 or rely on a teammate.
Nidoran♂PoisonThe anti-Brock weapon: Double Kick (Fighting) hits twice and deals heavy damage. Butterfree and its Confusion also do the job.
🏟️Pewter City Gym
Only one trainer stands between you and Brock: a Jr. Trainer♂ with a Diglett and a Sandshrew. The battle is easily won with Water or Grass attacks. After that, it’s time for the Gym Leader.

Onix is the big obstacle: its Defense is enormous, but its Special (the “Special” stat of the first generation) is weak. Water and Grass attacks, which are special attacks, knock it out in two or three hits. Watch out for Bide: for two or three turns, Onix absorbs hits and then returns double the damage it took. When you see “Onix is storing energy!”, use a status move instead (Growl, Tail Whip, String Shot) or switch Pokémon, then resume attacking once the backlash has passed.
In Yellow, Brock is a little weaker (Geodude Lv. 10, Onix Lv. 12), but your Pikachu doesn’t stand a chance: its Electric attacks have no effect on Ground Pokémon. Catch a Nidoran♂ on Route 22 or a Mankey on Route 22 or 3: the latter’s Low Kick (level 9) wreaks havoc on Geodude and Onix.
