Saffron City, the great metropolis at the heart of Kanto, has fallen into the hands of Team Rocket. The Grunts have stormed Silph Co., the company that makes Poké Balls, and are holding its president hostage. This is the longest and densest step of the adventure.

🥤Getting Into Saffron City
The city’s four gates are guarded by thirsty guards. Give one of them a drink bought on the rooftop of the Celadon Department Store (Fresh Water, Soda Pop or Lemonade): he shares it with his colleagues, and all the gates open. In town, Rocket Grunts block most of the buildings. Only the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart and a few houses are accessible. In one of them, Mr. Psychic gives you TM29 Psychic.
🏢Silph Co.
The tower has eleven floors packed with warp tiles and locked doors. Thirty Trainers (Rocket Grunts and Scientists) occupy the premises. Here is the essential route:
- Go up to 5F: the Card Key is at the end of the southernmost corridor. It opens all the doors in the building.
- On 7F, a grateful employee gives you a Lapras, a Water and Ice Pokémon that will be valuable going forward.
- Still on 7F, Blue awaits you in front of a warp tile: defeat him.
- That warp tile leads to the president’s office, on 11F, the top floor, where Giovanni awaits you.
LaprasWaterIceLapras, at Lv. 15, learns Surf, Ice Beam and Psychic. It will work wonders against Lance and his team of dragons, in the Elite Four.

This is one of the toughest battles in the game. His Alakazam, fast and powerful, can sweep a Fighting or Poison Pokémon with Confusion. Hit it with a powerful physical attack (Body Slam, Bite, Mega Punch). His starter, at Lv. 40, has finished evolving: bring Super Potions and Hyper Potions.

🥋The Fighting Dojo
Next to the Gym, the Dojo is a former Gym that has fallen from grace. Four Black Belts and their master challenge you with Fighting Pokémon. Defeat them: as a reward, the master lets you choose between Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. The other stays at the Dojo.
HitmonleeFightingA kicking specialist, powerful but fragile.
HitmonchanFightingA punching specialist, able to learn Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Thunder Punch.
🔮Saffron City Gym
Sabrina’s Gym is divided into about thirty small rooms linked by warp tiles. Seven Trainers (Psychics and Channelers) wait there. You will often have to retrace your steps: keep a mental note of the warp tiles you have already used; Sabrina’s room is in the center of the building.

In the first generation, the Psychic type is formidable: Ghost moves do nothing to it and the few Bug moves are weak. The best strategy is to hit hard and fast with physical attacks (Body Slam, Double-Edge, Dig): the Defense of Sabrina’s Pokémon is low. Alakazam, at Lv. 43, is very fast: a sturdy Snorlax or a high-level Pokémon is your best ally.
In Yellow, Jessie and James await you in Silph Co., and Sabrina fields a trio of Abra, Kadabra and Alakazam, all at Lv. 50.
