In Scarlet and Violet, there is no more Nursery: Eggs appear in the picnic basket when two compatible Pokémon are in your party.
Getting Eggs
- Put two compatible Pokémon in your party: a male and a female from the same Egg Group, or any Pokémon along with a Ditto.
- Start a picnic and make a sandwich with Egg Power (otherwise Eggs are rare).
- Wait a few minutes near the table: Eggs pile up in the basket, up to 10 at a time.
- Take the Eggs from the basket: they join your party or your boxes.
With Egg Power Lv. 2 or 3, expect several dozen Eggs in 30 minutes. The rate is better if both parents are the same species and come from different games (different original Trainers).
What the parents pass down
| Trait | How to pass it down |
|---|---|
| IVs | 3 random IVs from the parents; 5 if a parent holds a Destiny Knot |
| Nature | Guaranteed if a parent holds an Everstone |
| Hidden Ability | Often passed down by the mother (or by the parent that isn’t Ditto) |
| Egg Moves | Passed down by the parents; see the Mirror Herb below |
| Poké Ball | The mother’s (or that of the parent that isn’t Ditto) |
| Tera Type | Never: the baby gets one of its types at random |
The Mirror Herb
New in the 9th generation: a Pokémon holding a Mirror Herb during a picnic can learn an Egg Move from any other Pokémon present that knows it, even one of a different species. It needs a free move slot.
Hatching faster
- Walk or run with your Ride Pokémon: Eggs hatch as you take steps.
- A Pokémon with the Flame Body Ability (like Fletchinder, Talonflame or some Charcadet) in your party halves the hatching time.
- Egg Power also reduces the number of steps required.
No more need for Incense: a couple of Marill will happily produce an Azurill Egg. And for shiny hunting through breeding, see the Masuda Method in our shiny Pokémon guide.
