Understanding types is the key to every Pokémon battle. Each Pokémon has one or two types, and every move has one too. Depending on how they combine, an attack can deal double damage… or none at all.

Dual types: ×4 and ×¼

When a Pokémon has two types, you multiply the two results. An attack that is super effective against both types deals ×4; one that is resisted by both deals ×¼. And if one of the types is immune, the result is always ×0. Examples from Paldea:

Meowscarada (Grass/Dark)

Bug

Psychic

Bug is super effective against Grass and against Dark: ×4. However, it is immune to Psychic thanks to its Dark type.

Two immunities at once: Ground (Flying) and Psychic (Dark).

Quaquaval (Water/Fighting)

Its two types cover each other well: Rock, Steel, Fire, Ice, Bug and Dark are all resisted.

Immunities to know by heart

Some Abilities add immunities: Levitate (Ground), Water Absorb (Water), Volt Absorb (Electric), Sap Sipper (Grass), Flash Fire (Fire), Earth Eater (Ground)… That is what makes Mismagius and Orthworm so tricky in the adventure.

Same-type attack bonus (STAB)

A move that shares a type with the Pokémon using it is more powerful: ×1.5. A Quaxly using Water Gun (Water) therefore hits harder than with Tackle (Normal). This bonus stacks with effectiveness: a super effective attack with the same-type bonus does ×3. That is why you should always favor attacks of your Pokémon’s own type.

A good Trainer’s reflexes

  • The starter triangle: Grass beats Water, Water beats Fire, Fire beats Grass.
  • Fighting hits Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark and Steel hard, but can’t touch Ghost.
  • Fairy neutralizes Dragons (immunity) and hits them super effectively; it fears Poison and Steel.
  • Steel resists ten types: it is the best defensive type.
  • Ground hits five types super effectively, including Electric, Fire and Steel, but not flying Pokémon.
