Pokémon Sun and Moon are still perfectly playable today, as long as you have the right console and a cartridge. However, everything that went through the Internet has disappeared or is about to. Here is where things stand.

🎮On which consoles?

Sun and Moon run on the whole Nintendo 3DS family: 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL and New 2DS XL. The more powerful “New” models slightly reduce the slowdowns in Double Battles. The game is not available on Nintendo Switch.

🌐What no longer works

  • The Nintendo eShop on 3DS closed in March 2023: you can no longer buy the digital version.
  • Online play for 3DS games ended in April 2024: no more GTS, Wonder Trade, ranked battles or online Festival Plaza.
  • Distributions of Pokémon and Z-Crystals ended long ago.

🤝What still works

  • The complete adventure, from Iki Town to the Battle Tree.
  • Local trades and battles, between two nearby consoles, from Festival Plaza.
  • The QR Scanner, which works offline: the QR codes of Alola’s Pokémon remain valid.

📦Your Pokémon to HOME

Pokémon Bank lets you deposit your Sun and Moon Pokémon, then send them to Pokémon HOME and Switch games. It is used from a 3DS where it is already installed. According to the announcement relayed by Poképédia, Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter are due to close on February 26, 2027: if you care about your Alola Pokémon, transfer them before then.
