Pokémon SunandMoon

Four islands, seven Trials, one Island Challenge

The complete guide to Alola: the walkthrough in 35 steps, the 302 Pokémon of the Alola Pokédex, the Trials and their Totem Pokémon, the 29 Z-Crystals, the Ultra Beasts and expert features reserved for Premium members.

01 — The Island Challenge

Four islands, four colors

In Hawaiian, the island names are colors: melemele is yellow, ʻākala is pink, ʻulaʻula is red and poni is purple, the official colors of Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai, which inspired them. Each island has its Guardian, its Kahuna and its Trials; these colors guide the whole walkthrough.

02 — Day or night

Sun or Moon: twelve hours apart

Your choice switches the whole mini-site: a beach at sunset and Solgaleo for Sun, a starry night and Lunala for Moon. Wild Pokémon tables, Totem Pokémon and exclusives adapt to your version.

07 — The legends of Alola

The sun, the moon and the guardian deities

The little Cosmog that Lillie hides in her bag is the key to the story: it will become the beast that devours the sun or the one that calls the moon. The four guardian deities watch over the islands, and Necrozma waits in the shadows.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about Sun and Moon

Which version should you choose, Sun or Moon?

Both tell the same story. Pokémon Sun follows the console’s clock and features Solgaleo; Pokémon Moon is shifted by twelve hours and features Lunala. A handful of wild Pokémon are exclusive to each version: Alolan Vulpix, Turtonator, Passimian and Rufflet in Sun; Alolan Sandshrew, Drampa, Oranguru and Vullaby in Moon, for example. Two Ultra Beasts change as well.

How many Pokémon are in the Alola Pokédex?

302, including 81 new Pokémon and 18 Alolan forms of older Kanto Pokémon. Each island also has its own Pokédex: Melemele, Akala, Ula’ula and Poni.

Where are the Gyms in Sun and Moon?

There are none: Alola replaces the eight badges with the Island Challenge. Seven Trials, led by Captains and concluded by a Totem Pokémon, and four Grand Trials against the island Kahunas. Each victory earns a Z-Crystal, which unlocks a Z-Move.

Where can you catch Solgaleo, Lunala, the guardian deities and Necrozma?

The legendary of your version (Solgaleo in Sun, Lunala in Moon) is caught at level 55 at the Altar, right after Ultra Space. After the League, the four guardian deities wait at level 60 in their ruins, and Necrozma appears at level 75 in the Ten Carat Hill’s Farthest Hollow, once the Ultra Beast quest is complete.

Can you still play Pokémon Sun and Moon today?

Yes, on any Nintendo 3DS or 2DS family console, with the cartridge. The 3DS Nintendo eShop closed in March 2023 and online play for 3DS games ended in April 2024: trades and battles are now local only. Pokémon Bank, which lets you send your Pokémon to Pokémon HOME, is set to close on February 26, 2027, according to the announcement relayed by Poképédia.
