Hau’oli City is Alola’s Honolulu: shops, a beach, a harbor and palm trees. It is where you first meet the tank-top thugs calling themselves Team Skull, and where Captain Ilima wants to see what you are made of before his Trial.

🐮A Tauros on the road

West of the school, a Tauros blocks the way to town. Pet it: Kukui arrives and rides off on its back. Hau joins you for the tour of Hau’oli City. At the tourist office, the Poké Finder, a camera that will come in handy during a Trial, is added to your Rotom Dex, and Lillie gets her things back: a contact lens case and a makeup kit to change her look.

⚓Team Skull and Ilima

On the harbor, as you head to Ilima, two Team Skull Grunts pick a fight with you. Beat the one who provokes you, with his single Pokémon, then the Captain challenges you in turn to gauge your potential.

Our strategy

Yungoos opens the battle with Bite. It is weak to Fighting.
Smeargle is more dangerous: it knows a move that is super effective against your starter. Switch Pokémon if needed and hit it fast.

Ilima goes off to prepare his Trial at Verdant Cavern. A second Tauros blocks the north exit of the city: pet it too.

🫐Route 2 and the Berry Fields

On Route 2, a panicked Delibird leads you to the Berry Fields: the two Team Skull Grunts are trying to steal the harvest. Beat the more aggressive of the two, who has a Drowzee that can put you to sleep; they flee toward the cave and the owner gives you an Oran Berry.

A little further on, Hau is waiting in front of the route’s Pokémon Center and gives you three Revives. The Route 2 motel nearby will play a role after the Pokémon League.

🪦Hau’oli Cemetery

East of Route 2, the little cemetery is optional but useful: Gastly, a Ghost type, is immune to the Fighting attacks of the upcoming Grand Trial. By day you will also meet Drifloon there, and at night Misdreavus. Pick up TM56 Fling and TM100 Confide on the way.
