Alolan Forms

In Sun and Moon, Pokémon you thought you knew by heart have changed: a snow-white Vulpix, a Raichu that surfs on its tail, an Exeggutor with an endless neck. These are the Alolan forms, adapted to the climate and history of the archipelago.

A regional form keeps its National Dex number, but changes in appearance, type, Ability and often moves. Eighteen Pokémon, all from the first generation, have an Alolan form. Professor Samson Oak, whom you meet in Malie City, studies them.

First number: Alola Pokédex; second: National Pokédex. The colored dots show the island Pokédexes (yellow Melemele, pink Akala, red Ula’ula, purple Poni). 🌍Why these Pokémon changed

The climate

Vulpix and Sandshrew took refuge on the snowy peaks of Mount Lanakila: they became Ice-type. Exeggutor, soaked in tropical sun, grew enormously and took on the Dragon type.

People

Yungoos was introduced to hunt Rattata, which became nocturnal and Dark-type. Alolan Grimer were imported to devour the archipelago’s waste.

Traditions

Alolan Marowak, Fire and Ghost, twirl their flaming bone in a ritual dance. Alolan Meowth, spoiled by the royal family of old, became proud and Dark-type.

💡Good to know

• The regular forms of these Pokémon still exist, but do not live in Alola: they arrive through trade or Pokémon Bank.
• When hatching, an Egg laid at the Nursery by an Alolan form produces an Alolan form. To get the regular form, one of the parents must be that form and hold an Everstone.
• Raichu, Exeggutor and Marowak always take their Alolan form if they evolve in the archipelago.
