Seasons and phenomena in Pokémon Black and White

Unova is a living region. The seasons change every month, and the scenery comes alive: trembling grass, dust rising in caves, shadows passing over water and bridges. Each of these phenomena hides rare Pokémon or items.

Black and White follow the console’s calendar, but a season lasts only a month: that makes three full cycles a year.

Black and White follow the console's calendar: the season changes at the start of each month, three times a year (spring in January, May and September; summer in February, June and October; autumn in March, July and November; winter in April, August and December).

Pokémon whose presence depends on the season are rare, but they exist: the marshes of Icirrus City and Route 8, home to Stunfisk, Shelmet and Palpitoad, are frozen in winter, while certain Ice-type Pokémon only appear in winter. 🌾Dark grass

Darker than normal tall grass, it sometimes triggers Double Battles against two wild Pokémon. As long as two remain, you can’t throw a Poké Ball. The Pokémon there are also a bit stronger. The first patches are on Route 3.

🌿Rustling grass

From time to time, a tuft of grass starts to tremble. Walk into it: most often you’ll find Audino, which gives a lot of experience, but also Pokémon you can’t find anywhere else at that point in the adventure and evolved forms, such as Musharna in the Dreamyard or Whimsicott and Lilligant in Pinwheel Forest.

🌫️Dust clouds

In caves, whirls of dust sometimes rise from the ground. They hide either an item (often a Gem) or a Pokémon: Drilbur in Wellspring Cave, Chargestone Cave and Twist Mountain, then Excadrill on Victory Road, in Giant Chasm and in Challenger’s Cave.

🌊Shadows on the water and on bridges

On the water, ripples signal rarer Pokémon than the ones you meet while surfing. With the Super Rod, fish in these shadows: you’ll find, for example, Milotic on Route 1, and Dratini and Dragonite around Dragonspiral Tower. On bridges, bird shadows hide Ducklett (Driftveil Drawbridge) or Swanna (Marvelous Bridge), and sometimes Feathers.

🎭Fake items

Some Poké Balls lying on the ground are disguised Pokémon: Foongus on Route 6 and Route 10, and Amoonguss on Route 10. Picking them up triggers a battle.
