Clay looks gruff, but his workers adore him. His Gym is a deep-dug mine: you have to go down, elevator after elevator, to an immense slab stamped with the logo of the Unova Gyms. The Gym Leader is waiting at the bottom, in the middle of a construction site.

⛏️The descent
The Gym Guide gives you a Fresh Water in the lobby, decorated with paintings. At the back, a first elevator goes down into the mine. A Trainer explains the principle: go down as low as you can. Workers and employees await you between the elevators, with Drilbur, Sandile and Palpitoad. The last elevator plunges down a shaft to the Gym Leader.

🪨The battle

Clay
📍 Driftveil GymGround
All three Pokémon know Bulldoze, which also lowers Speed. Your Flying Pokémon are immune to it, but Excadrill knows Rock Slide: do not count on them alone.
Palpitoad, Water and Ground, has only one weakness, but it is a quadruple one: Grass. Servine, Pansage or Whimsicott sweep it in one hit.
Krokorok, Ground and Dark, fears Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting and Bug. Its ability can lower your Attack on arrival: prefer special attacks.
Excadrill (Level 31), Ground and Steel, is the most formidable: fast and powerful, it fears Fire, Fighting, Ground and Water. A Water Pokémon like Dewott, Simipour or Ducklett works wonders.
Clay hands you the Quake Badge, which lets you use Fly outside battle. He will give you his TM78 Bulldoze a little later, at the entrance to Chargestone Cave.
🦅Bianca and HM02 Fly

Musharna knows Hypnosis and Lucky Chant, which prevents critical hits: attack it with Bug, Ghost or Dark moves. Her Herdier has learned Work Up: knock it out before it powers up.
After the battle, Bianca gives you HM02 Fly. Thanks to the Quake Badge, you can now fly to any city you have already visited. Teach it to a Tranquill or a Ducklett.
Next step: Route 6 and Chargestone Cave.
