Unova’s Pokémon mostly evolve by leveling up, but not only that: seven different stones, friendship, trades, and even a unique evolution where two Pokémon must be traded for each other. Here are all the evolutions in the Unova Pokédex, followed by where to find each item.

The table follows the order of the Unova Pokédex. “Level up with high friendship” means the Pokémon evolves the next time it gains a level, as soon as its friendship is high enough: keep it in your party, have it massaged in Castelia City, and don’t let it faint.

✨What’s new in Generation V

  • A cross-trade: Karrablast and Shelmet only evolve if they are traded for each other. Karrablast becomes Escavalier by “stealing” Shelmet’s shell, and Shelmet, now free, becomes Accelgor.
  • The three monkeys each evolve with the stone of their element: Leaf Stone for Pansage, Fire Stone for Pansear, Water Stone for Panpour.
  • Evolution by trade: Boldore becomes Gigalith and Gurdurr becomes Conkeldurr when traded, with no item needed.
  • Long waits: Deino doesn’t reach its final form, Hydreigon, until level 64, and Larvesta becomes Volcarona at level 59.
