North of Castelia City, Route 4 is a construction site battered by sandstorms. To the west lies Desert Resort, where the ruins of Relic Castle, a city more than 2,500 years old, sink into the sand. Your two rivals are waiting for you along the way.

From the checkpoint north of Castelia City, Bianca challenges you. Further along the route, it’s Cheren’s turn. Their teams have grown: each has evolved their starter and caught new recruits.

Our strategy

Cheren has caught a Pidove and a Liepard, which is fast and lowers your accuracy with Sand Attack. His evolved starter (level 22) still has the type advantage over yours: save the monkey with the favorable type for it.

In the sand of the route live Sandile, Darumaka and Scraggy. A worker, in a house to the northwest, gives you TM28 Dig; TM41 Torment is hidden behind the safety barriers, north of the buildings under construction. Before the gate to Nimbasa City, Professor Juniper is waiting for you with 10 Ultra Balls.

🏜️Desert Resort

West of the route, the desert is constantly swept by a sandstorm that hurts Pokémon that are not Ground, Rock or Steel. Nurse Brett heals your team after you defeat him: he serves as a Pokémon Center. In the sand, look for Maractus, a dancing cactus, and Sigilyph, a strange Psychic and Flying bird, both fairly rare, and Dwebble.

🏛️Relic Castle

In the heart of the desert, Relic Castle is almost entirely engulfed. For now, only the ground floor and the first basement are accessible. Beware of the quicksand: it pulls the player down to the lower floor.

On the ground floor, a Backpacker offers you a choice between two brand-new fossils. Have them revived at the Nacrene City museum, at level 25:

  • TirtougaWaterRock

Cover Fossil: Tirtouga, a very defensive Water and Rock turtle, which will become Carracosta.

  • ArchenRockFlying

Plume Fossil: Archen, a very offensive Rock and Flying bird, which will become Archeops. Its Defeatist ability halves its strength when its HP falls below half.

You’ll only get one fossil: the other is obtained by trade. You’ll come back to Relic Castle much later, when its basements are opened up: see step 23.
