Burgh is as much a painter as a Gym Leader: his Gym is a giant hive, made of hexagonal cells that you cross by passing through walls of honey, and decorated with his own paintings. His Bug-type Pokémon are tougher than they look.

🍯The hive

The Gym Guide gives you a Fresh Water at the entrance. Move from cell to cell by passing through the honey walls. Some passages are closed by gates: press the buttons to make them disappear. Sometimes, a Clown pops out instead, with his Sewaddle, Venipede or Dwebble. The last cell leads to a purple staircase, at the top of which Burgh is waiting for you.

Our strategy

Leavanny (level 23), Bug and Grass, is his most dangerous Pokémon: String Shot lowers your Speed, Protect buys time and Razor Leaf often lands critical hits. Good news: it takes quadruple damage from Fire and Flying.
Dwebble, Bug and Rock, fears neither Fire nor Flying: target it with Water, Rock or Steel. Its Smack Down knocks your Flying-type Pokémon to the ground.
Whirlipede, Bug and Poison, can poison with Poison Tail. It fears Fire, Flying, Psychic and Rock.
The best weapons: a Fire-type Pokémon (Pignite, Pansear or Simisear), a Tranquill, or a Water-type Pokémon for Dwebble. With Snivy, don’t push it: Struggle Bug is super effective against it.

Burgh hands you the Insect Badge and TM76 Struggle Bug, a Bug-type move that lowers the opponent’s Special Attack with every hit.

🧭Before you leave

Before leaving Castelia City by Route 4 to the north, stock up on Potions: the route ahead crosses a desert swept by sandstorms, and your two rivals are waiting for you there. If you received your monkey’s evolution stone at Pier 1, now is the time to use it: it will learn almost no more moves by leveling up, but its stats jump.

Next step: Route 4, Desert Resort and Relic Castle.
