Mahogany Town is a peaceful mountain village, with its souvenir shop and its Rage Candy Bars. Yet something is off: the Gym is blocked, and to the north, the Magikarp of the Lake of Rage are being forced to evolve by a mysterious wave. A red Gyarados is spreading panic.

🐉The Lake of Rage and the Red Gyarados
For now, the only open road leads north, along Route 43. Halfway there, a toll gate is manned by Grunts demanding 1,000 Poké Dollars: bypass it through the tall grass to the west. Girafarig and, in Gold and Silver, Flaaffy live along the route.

At the lakeside, the water is churning. Surf to the middle: a level 30 Red Gyarados attacks you. It is a shiny Pokémon, the first one most players ever met, and the only guaranteed one in the game. Save before the battle: you only get one chance to catch it.
Whether it is caught or defeated, it leaves behind a Red Scale. Take it to Mr. Pokémon, on Route 30: he will trade it for an Exp. Share.

On the shore, a trainer in a cape is watching you: it is Lance, the Pokémon League Champion. He is investigating these forced evolutions and suspects Team Rocket of broadcasting a radio signal from Mahogany Town. He asks you to meet him in town.
🕵️The Team Rocket Hideout
Back in Mahogany Town, enter the souvenir shop in the center of the village. Lance joins you there, knocks out the shopkeeper (a Grunt in disguise) and reveals a secret staircase behind the counter: Team Rocket has set up its base beneath the shop.
- First basement level: the Persian statues are cameras. Every time you walk past one, Grunts come running. Switch off the alarm on the computer in the room guarded by a Scientist, then head down.
- Second basement level: Lance heals your Pokémon if you talk to him. The generator room is locked, and the boss’s office requires two passwords.
- Third basement level: two Team Rocket members hold the passwords, SLOWPOKETAIL and RATICATETAIL. Beat them, then go back up by the other staircase to the office.
- The Rocket Executive: his Arbok, Gloom and Murkrow guard the generator key.
- The generator: three Electrode power the transmitter. Defeat or catch them: the signal stops and the lake’s Magikarp calm down.

📍 Mahogany Town Team Rocket Hideout
Arbok lowers your Defense and then bites, Gloom puts you to sleep with Sleep Powder and Murkrow chases down Pokémon that flee. Nothing insurmountable at this stage: a Psychic or Ground Pokémon wipes out the first two, and an Electric or Rock attack takes care of Murkrow.
Once the generator is off, Lance thanks you with HM06 Whirlpool, which lets you cross whirlpools… and reach the Whirl Islands. On your way back up, you run into your rival: he does not challenge you this time, still shaken by his defeat against Lance.

Pryce’s Gym is an ice rink: the frozen floor makes you slide until you hit the next obstacle. Scout the path before you start. Skiers and Boarders field Water and Ice Pokémon, which are weak to Electric, Fighting, Fire and Rock.

Seel and Dewgong alternate Icy Wind (which slows you down) and Aurora Beam, and heal with Rest: hit hard so they have no time. Electric attacks (Ampharos, Magneton) sweep them. Piloswine, Ice and Ground, is immune to Electric: bring out a Fire, Water, Grass or Fighting attack. Watch out for its Blizzard.
