Between Ecruteak City and Mahogany Town, Route 42 runs into a mountain riddled with tunnels and waterfalls: Mt. Mortar. You can cross it in a few minutes… or spend hours there, searching for a martial artist who has withdrawn from the world and the treasures guarded by the waterfalls.

Goal
Reach Mahogany Town via Route 42
Rewards
Tyrogue, Dragon Scale and TM40 Defense Curl (Mt. Mortar, with Waterfall)
Recommended level
30 to 34 (Mt. Mortar is optional)

⛰️Route 42

Mt. Mortar splits the route into three sections, linked by the mountain’s lower entrances or by a pond you cross with Surf. In Gold and Silver, Mareep and Flaaffy show up here (along with Mankey in Gold); in Crystal, Ekans, Raticate and, at night, Marill. Three Apricorn trees line the way.

Crystal

In Crystal, Suicune appears on Route 42 once again, before vanishing to the east. Eusine, still on its trail, is never far away. These appearances set up your final encounter with the beast at the Tin Tower.

🥋Mt. Mortar

Mt. Mortar is entirely optional, but it hides several treasures. In the basement, a martial artist has retreated to train. He calls himself the Karate King. Beat him (Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee at level 34) and he entrusts you with a Tyrogue, the Pokémon that evolves into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop depending on its Attack and Defense stats at level 20.

The Karate King, deep inside Mt. Mortar

The path to the Karate King is long and runs through several levels of the mountain: the easiest approach is to come back with Strength, Surf and HM07 Waterfall, which you will get on the Ice Path. The upper floors also hide the Dragon Scale, which evolves a traded Seadra into Kingdra, and TM40 Defense Curl.
