Ecruteak City is the city of traditions: wooden houses, dancers in kimonos and two towers steeped in legend. One, the Burned Tower, burned down over a century ago; the other, the Tin Tower, is still waiting for Ho-Oh to return. This is where Johto’s story takes a turn.

🌳The tree that moves

On Route 36, a strange tree blocks the way. Water it with the Squirt Bottle: the “tree” jumps and attacks you. It is a level 20 Sudowoodo, a Rock Pokémon in disguise. You only get one chance to catch it: save beforehand. Its Rock attacks hit Flying and Fire Pokémon hard; Water, Grass and Fighting moves beat it.

The Squirt Bottle on Sudowoodo

Once the way is clear, the boy who was watching the scene gives you TM08 Rock Smash: it breaks the cracked rocks that block some paths. To the west, Route 36 leads to the northern part of the Ruins of Alph.

🍃Route 37

A short wooded route to Ecruteak City. Three Apricorn trees (red, blue and black) grow side by side here: pick them every day for Kurt. The Twins Ann and Anne challenge you as a duo with Jigglypuff and Clefairy.

🏯Ecruteak City

When you enter the Pokémon Center, you run into Bill, the inventor of the storage system. He has just repaired the Time Capsule, which lets you trade Pokémon with Red, Blue and Yellow. Then go to his parents’ house in Goldenrod City: he gives you an Eevee there, which can now evolve into Espeon by day or Umbreon at night, thanks to its happiness.

The Kimono Girls and their evolved Eevee

North of the Pokémon Center, the dance theater hosts five Kimono Girls. Each one fights with an Eevee evolution at level 17: Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Vaporeon and Jolteon. Beat them all: the old man sitting at the back, delighted by the show, gives you HM03 Surf. In the house next to the Gym, a man gives you the Itemfinder, which detects hidden items.

🔥The Burned Tower

In the northwest of the city, the Burned Tower is now nothing but a ruin. As soon as you enter, your rival crashes into you: he came to see the legendary Pokémon that are said to have slept here.

Our strategy

Haunter puts you to sleep and curses, Magnemite hurts Water and Flying Pokémon: a Ground or Fire attack takes care of it quickly. Zubat now knows how to cause confusion with Confuse Ray. His starter is at level 22: save your best asset for it.

The floor is fragile. Explore the ground floor (Rock Smash clears the cluttered corners), then drop through a hole into the basement. Three Pokémon statues rest there. As you approach, they awaken: Raikou, Entei and Suicune leap up and flee across Johto.

  • RaikouElectric

The beast of the lightning that struck the tower. It now roams the roads of Johto, at level 40.

  • EnteiFire

The beast of the flames that consumed it. It, too, roams Johto at level 40.

  • SuicuneWater

The beast of the rain that put out the fire. In Gold and Silver, it roams like the other two; in Crystal, it becomes the common thread of your adventure.

Crystal

In Crystal, Morty and a strange character, Eusine, are already in the basement. Eusine has been tracking Suicune for ten years: he watches, fascinated, as it flees and swears to find it. You will see him often along your way.

👻The Ecruteak City Gym

The Gym plunges into darkness: an invisible path crosses the room and you just need to follow the Trainers’ gaze so you do not fall. Mediums and Sages line up Gastly and Haunter.

Our strategy

Normal and Fighting attacks have no effect on Ghosts. Hypnosis then Dream Eater is Gengar’s favorite combination: keep an Awakening or a Mystery Berry. Ghost attacks (Shadow Ball, Lick), Dark attacks (Bite, which Croconaw knows well) and Psychic attacks hit home, as does Ground against their Poison half. An Umbreon, if it has already evolved, is nearly untouchable in this battle.

With Surf, many places open up to you. But the main road continues west: Route 38 leads to Moomoo Farm and Olivine City, by the sea.
