Blackthorn City, a mountain village and the cradle of dragon trainers. Its Gym Leader, Clair, is Lance’s cousin and makes no secret of her pride: even after losing, she refuses to acknowledge your victory. The eighth badge has to be earned twice.

🏔️Blackthorn City

This is where the Move Deleter lives, who can make a Pokémon forget any move, even an HM. Take the chance to free your Pokémon of Cut or Flash before the League. A resident is also looking for a female Dragonair and offers you a Rhydon in exchange (a Dodrio in Crystal).

🐉The Blackthorn City Gym

Our strategy

Her three level 37 Dragonair share Dragon Breath, Thunder Wave and Slam, and each hides a different move: Surf, Thunderbolt or Ice Beam. The Dragon type fears only Ice and Dragon: Lapras, Jynx, Piloswine or a Pokémon that knows Ice Beam or Blizzard will do the job. Kingdra, Water and Dragon, has only one weakness, Dragon: hit it with your most powerful attacks, whatever their type, and beware of its Hyper Beam.

“This is unacceptable!”

Defeated, Clair refuses to hand over her badge. She demands that you pass the trial of the Dragon’s Den, the sacred cave behind the Gym. A guard blocks the entrance until you win.

⛩️The Dragon’s Den

The den is a large underground lake. Surf toward the dragon shrine, in the south of the lake. Dratini swims in its waters, rarely: it is the only place in Johto where you can fish one up.

Gold · Silver

In Gold and Silver, the trial consists of bringing back the Dragon Fang, lying on a spit of land to the east of the lake. You need Surf and Whirlpool to reach it. As soon as you have it, Clair joins you, finally acknowledges your strength and hands you the Rising Badge and TM24 Dragon Breath.

Crystal

In Crystal, the shrine’s Master puts you through a short quiz about how you see Pokémon. Once you pass the trial, Clair hands you the Rising Badge and TM24 Dragon Breath. Then come back and talk to the Master: he gives you a Dratini. If you answered his questions with kindness, this Dratini knows ExtremeSpeed, a move it cannot learn anywhere else.
