On every frequency, the same message loops endlessly: Team Rocket has seized the Goldenrod Radio Tower to call out to their vanished leader, Giovanni. This is the great battle against the organization, and the door to the legendary Pokémon.

📻The Fake Director

Fly to Goldenrod City: Grunts stand guard everywhere. Enter the Radio Tower and climb floor by floor, beating the Grunts. On the third floor, a door stays shut: you will need a card to open it. On the top accessible floor, the “director” greets you… it is a Rocket Executive in disguise. Once unmasked and beaten, he leaves you the Basement Key and tells you that the real director is being held in the underground warehouses.

🔑The Underground Warehouses

Head back to the Goldenrod Tunnel. The locked door at the end of the passage opens with the Basement Key and leads to the warehouses beneath the Dept. Store. Your rival is waiting for you there: he has been training, and his team now has five Pokémon.

Our strategy

Sneasel, the newcomer, is fast and strikes with Feint Attack: a Fighting or Fire attack settles it. Haunter puts you to sleep and curses, Golbat causes confusion. His starter Pokémon is now at its final stage, at level 32: it is the big threat. Heal up before opening the door, there is no Pokémon Center in the warehouses.

Farther on, a series of doors is controlled by switches. Flip them in the right order to open the way to the last room and beat the Rockets guarding it: the real director, tied up in a corner, thanks you with the Card Key.

🏴Retaking the Tower

Back at the Radio Tower, insert the card on the third floor. The upper floors are crawling with Grunts and Scientists. On the fourth floor, two Executives block your way.

Our strategy

The first fields Arbok, Vileplume and Murkrow; the second, Houndour, Koffing and Houndoom. Dark and Fire Pokémon fear Fighting and Water; Vileplume fears Fire, Flying and Psychic. A high-level Psychic Pokémon is valuable, except against Murkrow and the two hellhounds, which are Dark-type.

With Team Rocket defeated, its members announce that they are disbanding for good. The director thanks you with a gift that depends on your version. A station employee also gives you TM11 Sunny Day.

🪶The Wings and the Bell

Gold

In Gold, you receive the Rainbow Wing. It opens up the Tin Tower in Ecruteak City: at the top, Ho-Oh awaits at level 40. Save before the battle. Lugia, for its part, will wait until the end of the adventure (level 70, with the Silver Wing received in Pewter City).

Silver

In Silver, you receive the Silver Wing. With Whirlpool, enter the Whirl Islands: Lugia rests at the very bottom, at level 40. Save before the battle. Ho-Oh, for its part, will wait until the end of the adventure (level 70, with the Rainbow Wing received in Pewter City).

Crystal

In Crystal, you receive the Clear Bell. Head to the Tin Tower in Ecruteak City: the Sages let you in. Three of them (Ken, Raoh and Shu) test you with their Noctowl and Eevee evolutions. At the top, Raikou and Entei run away, but Suicune stays and fights you at level 40. This is your chance to catch it. Ho-Oh and Lugia will come later, at level 60.

The road east of Mahogany Town is finally clear: the man who was blocking it has left. Head for Route 44 and Blackthorn City, the town of the last badge.
