Buildings, a station, a radio tower, a six-floor department store and a Game Corner: Goldenrod City is the capital of Johto. The whole city revolves around money… and around Whitney’s Gym, whose Miltank has made generations of players cry.

🚲The Bicycle and the Radio

Start with the Bike Shop, in the southwest of the city. The salesman, who left Cerulean City, cannot manage to sell his bikes: he lends you a Bicycle for free, as long as you advertise for him.

Next, head to the Radio Tower, to the north. At the reception desk, a receptionist offers you a five-question quiz about Pokémon. Answer Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No to win the Radio for your PokéGear. You will be able to listen to Professor Oak, Pokémon music and, later, far more useful frequencies.

🏬The Dept. Store

Six floors of items, a roof with vending machines and an elevator. The TMs are on the fifth floor. This is also where a Trainer is looking for a Drowzee (an Abra in Crystal) to trade for a Machop: catch the trade bait on Route 34, because Machop is the perfect weapon against Whitney.

🎰The Game Corner and the Goldenrod Tunnel

To play at the Game Corner, you need a Coin Case. It lies on the ground in the Goldenrod Tunnel, the underground passage that connects the north and south of the city. You also meet traveling shops there and the two barber brothers, who make your Pokémon happier depending on the day of the week.

🥛Goldenrod City Gym

The Gym’s Trainers use Normal-type Pokémon: Sentret, Jigglypuff, Meowth and Snubbull. The only type truly effective against them is Fighting. The Machop from the Dept. Store, or an Onix or a Geodude (which resist Normal-type moves), do the job.

Our strategy

Clefairy is annoying (Metronome can trigger anything, Encore locks your move) but fragile. The real wall is Miltank: Rollout doubles in power each turn, Attract paralyzes your male Pokémon, and Milk Drink restores half of its HP. Send in a female to ignore Attract, interrupt Rollout by switching Pokémon, and hit hard with Machop’s Fighting-type moves. A Rock or Steel Pokémon resists Rollout as well as Stomp. Bring Super Potions.

Once defeated, Whitney bursts into tears and refuses to give you her badge. Do not leave: a Trainer explains that you have to wait for her to calm down. Talk to her again and she hands you the Plain Badge and TM45 Attract.

💐The florist’s gift

With the badge in your pocket, step into the Flower Shop, in the northeast. She tells you that a strange tree that moves is blocking Route 36, and entrusts you with a watering can, the Squirt Bottle. Head north: Route 35 leads to the National Park and that very suspicious tree.
