A forest so dense that daylight barely gets in. In the heart of Ilex Forest, a small wooden shrine watches over the forest’s guardian. But for now, the problem is more down to earth: a Farfetch’d has run away.

🦆The runaway Farfetch’d

At the entrance to the forest, the Azalea Town charcoal maker’s apprentice is desperate: the Farfetch’d that helps him cut wood has run off. The Pokémon is not far, somewhere in the woods, and it flees whenever you approach.

The trick is to scare it in the right direction. Each time you talk to it, it runs the opposite way from you: approach from the side that pushes it toward its master. In most cases, it is enough to go around the grove on the right to bring it back toward the entrance. If it goes the wrong way, leave the area and come back: it returns to its starting position.

HM01 Cut

Delighted, the apprentice takes you to see his boss, who hands you HM01 Cut. Thanks to the Hive Badge, you can now cut the small trees blocking the way. When you pass back through Azalea Town, the man in the kiln house will give you a Charcoal, which boosts Fire-type moves.

🌳Crossing the woods

Cut the bush to the north and follow the path. In the center of the forest, near a ledge, a man gives you TM02 Headbutt. Teach it to a Pokémon of little use in battle: it lets you shake trees to make rare Pokémon fall, such as Pineco or Exeggcute, and later Heracross or Aipom.

At night, the forest changes its face: Oddish (and in Crystal, Venonat and Psyduck) replace the daytime Caterpie and Weedle. Paras, for its part, is there at all hours.

⛩️Celebi’s shrine

West of the forest stands a small wooden shrine, dedicated to the guardian of the woods. In Gold and Silver, it has no effect: it is mere decoration, fed by the legends told by the locals.

Crystal

In Crystal, the shrine is the key to a special event. On the Virtual Console, after you enter the Hall of Fame, the Goldenrod City Pokémon Center gives you the GS Ball. Show it to Kurt, who studies it for a day, then place it on the shrine: a level 30 Celebi appears. At the time, this event had only been activated in Japan.

🌼At the exit

In the guard gate between the forest and Route 34, a girl gives you TM12 Sweet Scent, a move that immediately attracts a wild Pokémon: very handy for completing the Pokédex. Goldenrod City, the largest city in Johto, is straight ahead.
