Violet City and Sprout Tower

Violet City is a peaceful town, turned toward the past. To the north stands Sprout Tower, a wooden pagoda that sways to the rhythm of a giant pillar; to the south, Falkner’s Gym, the first real challenge of your adventure.

🌲Route 31

Route 31 links Route 30 to Violet City. Only one lone trainer awaits you there. At the end of the path, a dark cave opens in the cliff: this is Dark Cave. Without Flash, you can barely see anything: it is better to come back later.

🏯Sprout Tower

North of Violet City, Sprout Tower houses Sages who train their Bellsprout. The central pillar swaying in the middle of the tower is, according to legend, a giant Bellsprout. Climb the three levels while defeating the Sages: their Grass Pokémon are weak against Fire, Flying and Ice.

At the top, the Elder is waiting for you. His two Bellsprout are no problem, but his level 10 Hoothoot is the toughest Pokémon in the tower. Once he is defeated, the Elder gives you HM05 Flash. In Gold, Silver and Crystal, it is not required to reach the Gym, but it will open Dark Cave for you.

🏘️In town

Violet City has a Pokémon School where you can read the basics of the game on the blackboard, and a house where a boy is looking for a Bellsprout. Catch one on Route 31 or in the tower to trade it to him for an Onix. A Rock Pokémon is the ideal weapon against Falkner.

The Gym is perched on walkways. Two Bird Keepers await you before the Gym Leader. Falkner inherited his love of Flying Pokémon from his father, and he fully intends to prove it.

Our strategy

Pidgey is a formality. Pidgeotto, at level 9, is the real obstacle: Mud-Slap lowers your accuracy and Gust hits hard. With Onix, the battle is settled. With Cyndaquil or Totodile, attack relentlessly. With Chikorita, avoid a head-on fight: send out an Onix, a Geodude or, in Gold and Silver, a Mareep, and keep Chikorita in reserve.

🥚The Mystery Egg

As you leave the Gym, Professor Elm calls you: his assistant is waiting for you at Violet City’s Pokémon Center. He entrusts you with Mr. Pokémon’s Egg so that you can hatch it. Keep it in your party: after a good deal of walking, it will give birth to a Togepi, a Pokémon never seen before.

Take Violet City’s south exit toward Route 32. But before heading off to Azalea Town, a short detour is in order to the mysterious Ruins of Alph, to the west.
