West of Route 32, stone ruins guard a secret centuries old. Sliding panels, inscriptions in an unknown alphabet and, beneath the floor, Pokémon shaped like letters: welcome to the Ruins of Alph.

🧩Four puzzles, four fossils
The ruins consist of four small chambers. In each one, a wall bears a sliding puzzle, like a sliding-tile game, to reassemble the image of a Pokémon: Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Ho-Oh and Omanyte. The Kabuto and Aerodactyl chambers are accessible right away; the Ho-Oh and Omanyte ones can only be reached through Union Cave, with Surf.
As soon as the image is complete, the floor collapses and you fall into the large underground chamber. No need to press a button: just let it happen.
🔤The 26 Unown
Each solved puzzle awakens some of the Unown sleeping beneath the ruins. They only appear in the underground chambers, and only the awakened forms:
- Kabuto puzzle: Unown A to K
- Omanyte puzzle: Unown L to R
- Aerodactyl puzzle: Unown S to W
- Ho-Oh puzzle: Unown X to Z
Once you have caught three different forms, a scientist from the Research Center stops you at the exit and gives you the Unown Dex, an extension of the Pokédex that lists the letters already caught.

💎Crystal’s secret chambers
In Crystal, an inscription in Unown appears on the wall at the back of each chamber once its puzzle is solved. Each one describes an action to perform in front of the wall to open a secret chamber containing four items:
- Kabuto chamber: “ESCAPE” — use an Escape Rope in front of the wall.
- Aerodactyl chamber: “LIGHT” — use Flash.
- Ho-Oh chamber: “HO-OH” — put a Ho-Oh in your party.
- Omanyte chamber: “WATER” — use a Water Stone.
Each secret chamber leads to a second room whose floor bears a message in Unown, such as “HERE OUR WORDS WILL REMAIN FOR ETERNITY” in the Kabuto chamber.
🐾The grass around the ruins
Around the ruins, the tall grass shelters Natu and, more rarely, Smeargle, the painter Pokémon that can copy any move with Sketch. The northern part, accessible from Route 36, is guarded by a Psychic and his Girafarig: come back later, as those Pokémon are level 20.
