Three years after Red’s feats, Kanto has changed: houses have been torn down, a power plant has shut down, and Gym Leaders have retired. The S.S. Aqua, the liner that links Olivine City to Vermilion City, takes you there for the second half of the adventure, with eight new Badges to win.

Objective
Reach Kanto and defeat Lt. Surge
Gym type
Electric
Rewards
Thunder Badge, Metal Coat, Rare Candy
Recommended level
45 to 50

🚢Aboard the S.S. Aqua

After the League, Professor Elm gave you the S.S. Ticket. The S.S. Aqua leaves Olivine City on Monday and Friday (and returns from Vermilion City on Wednesday and Sunday). Show your ticket at the pier.

“The ship leaves from Olivine City”

During the crossing, an old man is looking for his granddaughter, who has slipped away. She is playing with the captain in his cabin on the lower deck, but a sailor is blocking the corridor: first defeat the trainers on the deck, including a sailor near your cabin. Bring the little girl back to her grandfather: he gives you a Metal Coat, the item that makes Onix evolve into Steelix and Scyther into Scizor when traded.

⚓Vermilion City

The port has barely changed. At the Pokémon Fan Club, listen to the chairman’s story: he thanks you with a Rare Candy. Also keep in mind the Fan Club member who loves Clefairy: he plays a part in the Magnet Train story.

The Fan Club's Rare Candy

To the east of the city, in front of Diglett’s Cave, a Snorlax is sleeping across the path. Nothing will wake it for now: you will have to play it the Poké Flute tune broadcast by Kanto’s radio… once you can pick up the signal.

Our strategy

A Ground Pokémon (Earthquake, Magnitude, Dig) almost wins this battle on its own. Watch out for the two Electrode, which set up Double Team and then use Explosion: knock them out with the first hit, or keep a Ghost Pokémon (Gengar) in reserve, as it is immune to Normal-type attacks. Magneton knows Zap Cannon, which is guaranteed to paralyze if it hits. Electabuzz, the strongest (level 46), strikes with ThunderPunch and Thunder.
