⛏️Oreburgh City

A boy guides you to the Gym, but Barry comes out of it: the Gym Leader isn’t there. He is working at the Oreburgh Mine, south of town. Before heading there, visit the houses:

  • in the building to the left of the Poké Mart, a woman trades her Abra Kazou, which holds an Oran Berry, for a Machop;
  • upstairs in the same building, a man gives you a Heal Ball if you show him a Zubat or a Geodude;
  • a woman, upstairs in the northwest building, gives you a Dusk Ball, effective at night and in caves;
  • the Mining Museum, to the northeast, tells the story of the mine. Later, a man there will revive your fossils.

🪨Oreburgh Mine

The mine descends two levels, between conveyor belts and mountains of coal. Workers battle there with Machop, Geodude and Onix. At the bottom of the lower level, Roark gives a demonstration of Rock Smash on a boulder, then heads back up to wait for you in his Gym.

The mine is the right place to catch a Geodude or an Onix, but for this Gym you’ll mostly need Water, Grass, Fighting or Ground Pokémon.

🏟️Roark’s Gym

The Gym is short: a direct path leads to the Gym Leader, another goes past two young trainers. Take the trainers’ path: the experience points are worth having, and you won’t be able to battle them again once Roark is beaten.

Our strategy

With Piplup or Turtwig, the battle is simple: Bubble for Piplup, Absorb then Razor Leaf for Turtwig wreak havoc on three Rock Pokémon.
With Chimchar, it’s the hardest fight in the game at this stage. Evolve it into Monferno (level 14): it learns Mach Punch, a Fighting attack that is very effective against Geodude, Onix and Cranidos. Otherwise, a Machop (Karate Chop), a Budew from the south of Route 204 or, in Platinum, a Psyduck from Oreburgh Gate will save you.
Beware of Cranidos: its Headbutt is powerful and can cause flinching. Save your best Pokémon for it, and keep a spare Potion.

Roark gives you the Coal Badge, which lets you use Rock Smash outside of battle, and TM76 Stealth Rock. This move lays down sharp stones that hurt every opposing Pokémon sent into battle: a favorite weapon in competitive play.

📺After the Badge

The Oreburgh Pokémon Center opens its basement: a hostess gives you the Pal Pad, to play with nearby friends. There’s nothing more to do here: head back to Jubilife City via Route 203. The northern path awaits you, and so does Team Galactic.

Next stop: Route 204 and Floaroma Town.
