🏛️Eterna City

Look around town before heading to the Gym:

  • in a house, a Trainer will trade you his Chatot, which holds a Leppa Berry, for a Buizel;
  • the Herbal Medicine Shop, east of the Galactic building, sells cheap but bitter herbal remedies that lower happiness;
  • the Underground Man, in the house east of the Pokémon Center, will soon give you the Explorer Kit (next step);
  • the Draco Plate is hidden behind the statue in the main square.

🌺Gardenia’s Gym

Gardenia waits for you in front of her Gym and walks in ahead of you. The Gym differs from one version to another.

Diamond · Pearl

In Diamond and Pearl, the Gym is a large greenhouse where Trainers hide behind the trees.

Platinum

In Platinum, the center of the Gym is a big flowery clock. Each Trainer you defeat turns the hands, which gradually open the path to Gardenia.

Our strategy

All three Pokémon know Grass Knot, a move whose power increases with the target’s weight. Light Pokémon (Staravia, Monferno, Shinx) suffer far less from it than heavyweights like Onix.
Staravia is the key: its Flying-type moves are super effective against all three. Wing Attack solves the problem quickly.
Roserade, the most dangerous of the three, paralyzes with Stun Spore and poisons with Poison Sting. Keep a Paralyze Heal on hand and hit it with Fire, Flying, Ice or Psychic moves.
If you chose Piplup, leave it on the bench: Water is not very effective against Grass.

Gardenia gives you the Forest Badge, which lets you use Cut outside of battle, and TM86 Grass Knot.

🗿The statue and Cynthia

Platinum

In Platinum, Barry drags you to the statue in the main square. A blue-haired man gazes at it for a long time, then walks away: it is the man from Lake Verity.

A blonde woman dressed in black approaches you: this is Cynthia, a friend of Professor Rowan who is passionate about the myths of Sinnoh. She gives you HM01 Cut.

👻The Old Chateau

With Cut, go back to Eterna Forest through the east exit and cut down the bushes leading to the Old Chateau. Gastly haunt its hallways, and it hides some real treasures:

  1. The Dread Plate, in the westernmost room on the first floor.
  2. TM90 Substitute, in the easternmost room on the first floor.
  3. The Old Gateau, in a room on the first floor: an old cake that nonetheless cures all status problems.
