🌊Route 218

West of Jubilife City, the gate opens onto the sea. Surf west: fishermen and a sailor challenge you with Gyarados, Magikarp and Mantyke. On the shore, the grass shelters Floatzel, Gastrodon and, in Diamond, Mr. Mime (Glameow in Pearl). At the next gate, Professor Rowan’s assistant upgrades your Pokédex: it can now show the differences between males and females.

Our strategy

Heracross (Bug and Fighting) is extremely weak to Flying (4× effective): Staraptor eliminates it with Aerial Ace. His starter has now reached its final form in Platinum: keep your best attacker for it.

⚙️Byron’s Gym

The Gym is a maze of platforms linked by elevators and rails. Its trainers, Workers and Black Belts, mostly line up Onix and Steelix, along with a few Water and Fighting Pokémon.

Our strategy

Steelix, Steel and Ground, only fears Fire, Water, Fighting and Ground. Beware of its Ice Fang against your Ground and Dragon Pokémon.
Bastiodon, Rock and Steel, is a defensive wall, but it is 4× weak to Fighting and Ground. An Earthquake from Gabite or a Fighting move from Infernape takes it out in one hit.
In Diamond and Pearl, Bronzor opens the battle and can put you to sleep with Hypnosis. In Platinum, it is Magneton, Electric and Steel, 4× weak to Ground.
Fire, Fighting and Ground Pokémon get the job done.

Byron gives you the Mine Badge, which lets you use Strength outside battle, and TM91 Flash Cannon, a powerful special Steel move.

On your way out, Barry tells you about the meeting Professor Rowan is preparing at the library. But before that, the boat is waiting for you: Iron Island.
