Sunyshore City, the city of the sun, is built on solar panels and walkways above the sea. Its Gym Leader, Volkner, is bored: no Trainer is a match for him anymore. It’s up to you to give him back his taste for battle.

🏖️Route 222

From the Hotel Grand Lake, Route 222 runs east, now open. Its beaches are home to a dozen Trainers (levels 37 to 43), including many fishermen. In the fisherman’s house, show him a Remoraid longer than 60 cm to receive a Net Ball. Near the Pikachu fan’s house, a resident gives you TM56 Fling.

Diamond · Pearl

Mr. Mime lives in the grass in Diamond, Glameow and Purugly in the grass in Pearl.

☀️Sunyshore City and Flint

At the city entrance, a man with messy red hair approaches you: Flint. He notices your Badge collection and asks you to rekindle the fire in Volkner, his friend, who can’t find an opponent worthy of him. He leaves right away.

The Gym is closed: Volkner isn’t there. Go up the Vista Lighthouse, southeast of the city: he is gazing at the sea from the top floor. He agrees, without much enthusiasm, to come back and face you.

The Gym is a large room of gears and rotating platforms: colored switches make the walkways pivot. Nine Trainers are waiting for you, with Pokémon from level 41 to 48; not all of them are Electric (Steelix, Medicham, Kadabra…).

Our strategy

Ground is the key: it is immune to Electric. A Garchomp, a Hippowdon, a Torterra or a Golem will clean house. Watch out for Luxray’s Ice Fang and for his Pokémon’s Ice moves, which are effective against Ground and Dragon Pokémon.
In Diamond and Pearl, Volkner doesn’t use only Electric: Ambipom (Normal) and Octillery (Water) round out his team. Octillery isn’t affected by Ground like the others: hit it with Electric or Grass.
In Platinum, his team is entirely Electric, with Electivire at level 50. Its Fire Punch and Thunder Punch have wide coverage: save your best Ground Pokémon for it.

Volkner, delighted to have finally found an opponent on his level, gives you the Beacon Badge, which lets you use Waterfall outside battle, and TM57 Charge Beam. You now have all eight Sinnoh Badges!

🌊Jasmine and HM Waterfall

On the beach north of the city, a young woman is waiting for you: Jasmine, the Olivine City Gym Leader from the Johto region, visiting Sinnoh. Impressed by your victory, she gives you HM07 Waterfall, essential for reaching the Pokémon League.

Head north: Route 223 and Victory Road.
