A forest route in three tiers, an impatient rival and a first cave: Route 203 is the last training session before your first Badge. Take the chance to catch an Abra and raise your Pokémon a few levels.

Objective
Defeat Barry and cross Oreburgh Gate
Rewards
HM06 Rock Smash

⚔️Barry, round two

As soon as you step onto Route 203, Barry challenges you. He now has a level 7 Starly and his starter at level 9. If your starter has reached level 10, you shouldn’t have any trouble.

Our strategy

Lead with your starter against his Starly, then keep a Shinx or a Bidoof as backup. His starter still only has Normal-type moves: aim for speed and power. A Potion at the right moment makes all the difference.

🌲Route 203

Five young trainers are waiting for you on the route: a good source of experience. Don’t hesitate to head back to Jubilife City, which is close by, to heal. The tall grass hides a precious Pokémon: Abra (15% of encounters). It only knows Teleport and flees on the first turn: throw your Poké Ball right away, without attacking it. Once it becomes Kadabra (level 16), it’s a formidable Psychic attacker.

A pond lets you fish for Magikarp with the Old Rod. Zubat only appears at night.

⛰️Oreburgh Gate

The route ends at a small cave. Right at the entrance, a hiker gives you HM06 Rock Smash, which breaks cracked rocks. You won’t be able to use it outside of battle until you’ve obtained the Coal Badge. Teach it to a Bidoof or a Machop rather than your best Pokémon: an HM move can only be forgotten with the Move Deleter in Canalave City, much further on.

The ground floor is a simple T-shaped corridor: head east to reach Oreburgh City. The staircase to the north leads to a basement blocked by rocks. You’ll come back later, with Rock Smash, the Bicycle, Surf and Strength: it hides several TMs (TM70 Flash, TM31 Brick Break, TM01 Focus Punch) and the Earth Plate.
