The Great Marsh is Sinnoh’s Safari Zone: a vast expanse of mud and tall grass, crossed by a little tram, where Pokémon found nowhere else live. Every day, a different rare Pokémon shows up there.

Objective
Optional — catch the Pokémon of the Great Marsh
Rewards
HM05 Defog (Diamond and Pearl), one Shard per day (Platinum), Toxic Plate
Price
₽500 entry, 30 Safari Balls

🎫Safari rules

At the entrance, you pay your fee and receive 30 Safari Balls. In the Marsh, your own Pokémon do not battle: facing a wild Pokémon, you can throw a Safari Ball, or throw mud or bait at it, which change its chances of fleeing and being caught. The visit ends after 500 steps or when you run out of Balls.

The marsh is divided into six areas, linked by a tram. Watch out for deep mud: you can get stuck in it, and you then have to work your way out with the directional pad.

🐸The Pokémon of the Marsh

The same residents show up everywhere: Wooper, Quagsire, Bibarel and, at night, Hoothoot and Noctowl. In Diamond and Pearl, Marill and Psyduck are common; in Platinum, they make way for Tangela and Yanma.

The real rarities are the daily Pokémon: each day, one of them appears in an area of the marsh for the whole day (sometimes several in Platinum). To find out which one, pay ₽100 and look through the binoculars at the observatory in the entrance building.

🌫️HM05 Defog

Diamond · Pearl

In Diamond and Pearl, the Ace Trainer standing just to the right of the Marsh entrance gives you HM05 Defog. It clears the fog on Route 210 and Mt. Coronet. Don’t miss it: it is essential for what comes next.

Platinum

In Platinum, HM05 Defog is found in the Solaceon Ruins (step 14). The Ace Trainer at the entrance gives you a Shard per day instead, whose color changes depending on the day of the week. Shards can be exchanged for move lessons.

Back to the adventure: Route 210 and Celestic Town.
