Kalos is the first Pokémon region inspired by a European country, and that country is France, more precisely its northern half. For a French player, exploring Kalos is a game of spotting real places. Here is the complete map of correspondences, city by city.
The choice came from Junichi Masuda, the game’s director: for the Japanese, France is the country of beauty, fashion, gastronomy and refinement. The region’s name even comes from the Greek kalos, “beautiful”.
Even the Pokédex reflects it: its three parts, Coastal, Central and Mountain, are shown in blue, white and red, the colors of the French flag.
